Introduction to Semiconductor

*** Free for Arkansas residents who are U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents

This introductory course covers the basics of semiconductor manufacturing and facility operations, serving as a practical starting point for high school students, career changers, or anyone looking to learn about the semi conductor industry. The curriculum details how silicon wafers are turned into active microchips, providing a clear look at essential steps in the process, including photolithography, epitaxy, ion implantation, and testing. Complex manufacturing concepts are broken down into accessible knowledge that explains how chips are produced.

Along with chip fabrication, the course covers the daily operations of cleanroom facilities. Topics include cleanroom basics—such as how airflow and pressure systems control contamination—as well as essential worker safety protocols. Coverage includes hazard communication, chemical and gas safety monitoring, and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). By the end of the course, participants gain a solid foundational understanding of cleanroom operations and entry-level industry practices.
