Introduction to Play Therapy

An overview of play therapy history and application will be discussed. Specific play therapy techniques such as art, sandtray play, water play, mutual storytelling, puppetry, board games, and role-plays will be presented in an experiential learning environment. Students will learn how to engage in specific play techniques. Discussion of applications with special populations will also be included.

  • Students will display an understanding of the purpose of play therapy.
  • Students will discuss about the methodology and application of play therapy.
  • Students will be able to apply methodologies and theories to specific play therapy techniques.
  • Students will examine the usefulness of toys and the layout of a therapeutic playroom.
  • Students will be able to apply modalities in an experiential environment.

An overview of play therapy with the elderly will be presented. Specific play therapy techniques such as art, sandtray play, water play, mutual storytelling, and board games, specific to this population will be presented in an experiential learning environment.
